Elliott Yamin Out on Idol

Elliot Yamin, 27, was voted off American Idol last night leaving contestants Taylor Hicks and Katharine McPhee to battle it out for the crown. The winner will be selected on May 24.   Simon Cowell predicted Yamin’s departure on The Tonight Show earlier this week, saying that he expected a final showdown between Taylor Hicks and Katharine McPhee, even implying that he would give McPhee an easier song to sing. “I think she’ll make the final, and I’ll tell you why: because I’m choosing one of her songs this week,” Cowell told Jay Leno.   Cowell was unimpressed with Yamin’s rendition of Ray Charles‘ “I Believe To My Soul” on Tuesday’s program. “Your songs are not going to carry you through to next week — that’s the problem,” he said.   The Richmond, Virginia native, who is 90 percent deaf in one ear, was Abdul’s favorite contestant. “You pierce through the heart,” she told Yamin.
